Dear friends all over the world,
things are happening in my usually so quiet city, that i would have never dreamt of. We, the student body of the main university in vienna have occupied the main lecture hall and some more, for four days now. that way we have prevented some lectures and exams from happening. This is a massive movement, that organised spontaneously after a small demonstration against the bachelor system in the academy of arts. We are now about 2000 people, that come regularly to meetings that happen twice a day (massive college meetings) and then split up in about 30 or 40 self organised, absolutely open groups that work on media and press, decoration, food, workshops, content of our slogans, cleaning up, keeping halls, first aid, perfomance and entertainment and whatnot. It is amazing how many people are actively involved, without being centrally organised, how much enthusiasm, ideas and energy they put into this. Well, i am in the middle of it, helping at the information point, trying to decorate the outer front of the university, trying to get some law students together and so on. I also enjoy just being there, part of it and meeting people.
Anyway, what we are claiming is open education for everyone. We are against restrictions and university fees. Therefore universities need more money. I know that might be a weird concept to those of you, who are studying in the US or UK, but here, we are not yet used to university fees and i think it is great to make education something that is really open to anyone and not building barriers between classes, financial and social. We are also for changes in the new Bachelor system that came along with the EU-wide Bologna-process. In this system we are very restricted in what courses we can take, they all follow a plan and you have not many options to choose. I think it is important that it is possible to take whatever subject you are interested, be it for personal interest, because this is what true education and learning is about. We have some more claims, which are hard to explain, because they are quite austria-specific.
We are aiming our protest mainly at the ministry of science, since there the budget is decided upon and the major changes are made. The university administration seems to be on our side, although they dont dare to explicitly say so, at least they have not told us to stop, neither have tried through securities, or simply cutting us off elictricity over the weekend, nor have they made statements to the media about what they think about this.
What i would like you to do, is, if you think this is a good thing, and are part of a student organisation or know any, maybe you can bring it up and "officially" send a little note of solidarity to unibrennt@gmail.com these are read in the big meetings for everyone and we draw a lot of energy of all kind of notes, that come until now from germany and other parts of austria mainly. Please also forward this mail!
I dont know if this protest will help us achieve what we want, but in any way it will change a lot for the people who are here. they realize what they can do, once they start and that we have skills and energy to put in for something, which it is a shame not to use.

Hola amigos de todo el mundo
Suceden cosas en mi usualmente callada ciudad, cosas que nunca habría soñado sucederían. Nosotros el cuerpo de estudiantes de la Universidad principal en Viena ocupamos el Auditorio Principal y algunos otros espacios, por 4 días hasta ahora, en este sentido bloqueamos algunas conferencias y exámenes por llevarse a cabo. Éste es un movimiento masivo que se organizó espontáneamente después de una pequeña manifestación en contra del sistema de nivel licenciatura en la Academia de Artes, ahora somos alrededor de 2000 personas que asistimos regularmente a las concentraciones que suceden dos veces al día (reuniones colegiales masivas) que a su vez se integran en alrededor de 30 y 40 grupos autoganizados, grupos absolutamente abiertos que trabajan en: medios y prensa, decoración, comida, talleres, contenido en slogans, limpieza, seguridad de los espacios ocupados, primeros auxilios, performance y entretenimiento, y en qué no?. Es impresionante como mucha gente está activamente involucrada, sin estar centralmente organizados, y cuánto entusiasmo, ideas y energía están destinando.
Bueno yo estoy en medio de esto, ayudando en el punto de información, tratando de decorar la fachada de la Universidad, tratando de juntar a los estudiantes de derecho y así… también disfrutando el estar ahí, siendo parte y conociendo gente.
Por lo que estamos reclamando ES POR UNA EDUCACIÓN ABIERTA PARA TOD@S. ESTAMOS EN CONTRA DE LAS RESTRICCIONES Y CUOTAS UNIVERSITARIAS, por lo tanto las universidades necesitan un mayor presupuesto. Yo sé que esto pude ser un concepto raro para ustedes que estudian en Reino Unido o Estados Unidos, pero aquí, no solemos pagar cuotas y yo creo que es importante hacer de la educación un derecho, abierto para tod@s y no construir barreras entre clases financieras y sociales.
Nos manifestamos en contra del las Reformas Universitarias que inician a partir de la formación de Unión Europea – llevando a cabo el Proceso de Bolonia. En este sistema estamos restringidos a seguir un plan sin muchas opciones a elegir. Creo que es importante cursar cualquier materia a la que estés interesad@, que la elección sea por intereses personales, porque esto es de lo que se trata una verdadera educación y aprendizaje. Tenemos algunos otros reclamos que son difíciles de explicar porque son de la callada Austria específicamente.
Nuestras propuestas van dirigidas principalmente hacia el Servicio de Ciencias, ya que es ahí donde designan el presupuesto y las reformas. La administración de la universidad parece estar de nuestro lado. Sin embargo es un desafío que lo pronuncien explícitamente, por lo menos no nos han dicho que paremos, tampoco lo han hecho a través de la seguridad o simplemente cortando la electricidad el fin de semana, ni han hecho declaraciones en los medios acerca de lo que piensan de esto.
Lo que me gustaría que ustedes hicieran: si ustedes piensan que es algo bueno y forman parte de alguna organización estudiantil o conocen alguna, tal vez podrían hacer saber esto y “oficialmente” nos enviaran una pequeña nota de solidaridad a unibrennt@gmail.com estas son leídas en las concentraciones y es de ahí de donde recibimos mucha energía y de todo tipo de notas, que nos han llegado hasta ahora de Alemania y otras partes de Austria principalmente, así que por favor reenvíen este mail.
no sé, si ésta protesta nos ayudara a alcanzar lo que nosotr@s queremos, pero de algún modo cambiará para mucha gente que está aquí, una vez que se dan cuenta de lo que pueden lograr, una vez que comenzamos y adquirimos habilidades y energía, es necesario depositarlo para algo pues sería una pena desperdiciarlo.
